Life saving operation carried out successfully near the Bosporus strait.
Seamen of “Vilnius Seaways” operated by UKRFERRY have come to rescue a vessel in distress with passengers on board.
At 07.00 a.m. LT today (04.09.2014) the Chief Mate of Car-Pax ferry “Vilnius Seaways” working on a regular itinerary between the port of Ilyichevsk (Ukraine) and Haydarpasa (Turkey) noticed a small boat amid stormy waves with numerous passengers using all efforts to attract attention. Captain Leontij Jemeljanov contacted turkish coast guard and started maneuvering to cover the boat from the stormy winter and waves.
Feeling relatively safely, the crew of the boat gave a sign that the engine broke down and the boat was in danger of capsizing. Considering the number of people on board, the boat with no name or port of registry was well overloaded.
One more hour later, Turkish rescue vessel “TCSG88” approached the vessel in distress. Mutual rescue operation was launched. Both captains coordinated maneuvering to ensure safety in transferring people from boat to TCSG88. Finally, all 50 persons including many children have been rescued and the rescue boat headed for Istanbul. “Vilnius Seaways” proceeded to Ilyichevsk.
The first broadcast in a series of reports on the Black Sea of the famous British media corporation BBC, recorded in June 2017 on board ferries of “Ukrferry”, as well as in Odessa, Georgia and Turkey has been released.
